Proviso

A clause within a legal document, such as a statute, contract, or deed, that introduces a condition, limitation, or stipulation. It qualifies or restricts the preceding statement, often beginning with the phrase "provided that" or a similar expression. The effect of a proviso is to create an exception or impose a specific requirement for the main clause to become or remain effective.
