Substitution of parties

The legal procedure for replacing an original party to a lawsuit with a new party. This often occurs when an original party dies, becomes incompetent, or transfers their interest in the litigation. Rules of civil procedure, such as Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 25, govern the circumstances and process for such substitutions.
