Subtenant

A person who leases all or part of a rented property from an existing tenant, rather than directly from the landlord. The original tenant remains primarily responsible to the landlord for rent and lease obligations. Subtenancy arrangements are typically governed by the terms of the original lease and local landlord-tenant laws.
