Forfeiture

The divestiture of property or rights as a penalty for a crime, breach of contract, or other unlawful act. This legal process results in the transfer of ownership from the offender to the state or another party. Common types include civil forfeiture, where property connected to a crime is seized, and criminal forfeiture, which is part of a sentence.
