Compulsory counterclaim

A claim that a defendant must assert against the plaintiff in the same lawsuit, arising out of the same transaction or occurrence as the plaintiff's original claim. Failure to raise a compulsory counterclaim typically results in its forfeiture in future litigation. Rule 13(a) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure governs compulsory counterclaims.
