Counterclaim

A claim made by a defendant in a lawsuit against the plaintiff, asserting a separate cause of action. This allows the defendant to seek relief from the plaintiff within the same litigation. Counterclaims can be compulsory, arising from the same transaction, or permissive, arising from a different transaction.
