A common set of accounting principles, standards, and procedures that public companies in the United States must follow when they compile their financial statements. These Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are issued and maintained by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB). The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires that public companies adhere to GAAP for financial reporting.
