The person in whose name a dwelling is owned or rented, and who is considered the head of the household for legal and census purposes. This individual has primary responsibility for maintaining the property and paying rent or mortgage. In bankruptcy law, the term is relevant for claiming a homestead exemption, which protects a certain amount of equity in the primary residence from creditors.
