Head of family

A person who maintains a family by supporting dependents who live with them, a status that state homestead, property tax and creditor exemption statutes use to decide who qualifies for an exemption. Statutes define it differently: some require a dependent spouse, child or relative in the household, and others extend it to any householder. It is not the federal tax filing status called head of household.
