Family purpose doctrine

A legal doctrine, adopted in some states, that holds the owner of a family vehicle liable for damages caused by any family member driving the vehicle with the owner's express or implied consent. This doctrine extends liability beyond the direct driver to the head of the household. It is based on the premise that the vehicle is maintained for the general use and convenience of the family.
