Driving under the influence

The act of operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or other substances to a degree that renders the driver incapable of safely controlling the vehicle. This offense is prohibited by state laws across the United States. Penalties for driving under the influence (DUI) often include fines, license suspension, and incarceration.
