Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857)

A landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that ruled African Americans, whether enslaved or free, could not be American citizens and therefore had no standing to sue in federal court. The Court also declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, asserting that Congress could not prohibit slavery in U.S. territories. This decision intensified sectional tensions leading to the Civil War.
