Cruzan v. Missouri Department of Health (1990)

A landmark United States Supreme Court case that affirmed a competent individual's right to refuse life-sustaining medical treatment. The Court also held that states could require clear and convincing evidence of an incapacitated patient's wishes before allowing the withdrawal of such treatment. This ruling established a legal standard for end-of-life decisions in the absence of a living will.
