An autonomous international organization established in 1957 under the United Nations umbrella, dedicated to promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy and preventing its use for military purposes. It establishes safety standards and verifies that nuclear materials are not diverted from peaceful uses through its safeguards system. The IAEA reports annually to the UN General Assembly and, when appropriate, to the Security Council.
