Inventor

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002741

An individual who conceives the invention claimed in a patent, meaning a new and useful process, machine, manufacture, composition of matter or improvement of one. Inventorship turns on contributing to the conception of at least one claim, so a person who only supplies materials or follows instructions is not an inventor. Inventors must be named in the application, though under the America Invents Act the applicant can be an assignee.
