Utility patent

A type of patent granted for a new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof. It protects the functional aspects of an invention, distinguishing it from design patents which protect ornamental appearance. Utility patents typically have a term of 20 years from the date of filing.
