Uti possidetis juris

A principle of international law stating that newly formed sovereign states should retain the borders of their former administrative divisions. This doctrine aims to prevent disputes and maintain stability by preserving existing boundaries, particularly after decolonization or the dissolution of larger political entities. It was notably applied in the decolonization of Latin America and Africa.
