Legally protected creations of the mind, such as inventions, literary and artistic works, designs, and the names, symbols and images used in commerce. They are protected chiefly through patents, copyrights, trademarks and trade secrets, which give the owner exclusive rights to use and license the creation. Patent and copyright protection lasts for a fixed term, such as 20 years from filing for a utility patent, while trademarks and trade secrets can last indefinitely.
