A category of property made up of intangible creations of the mind: patents for inventions, copyrights for works of authorship, trademarks for brand identifiers, and trade secrets for confidential business information. Rights are territorial, so each country grants and enforces them under its own law, coordinated by treaties such as the Paris Convention for patents and trademarks and the Berne Convention for copyright. A utility patent lasts 20 years from filing, while trademark rights can continue indefinitely with use.
