Lay witness

An individual who testifies in court based on their personal observations, perceptions, or experiences, rather than specialized knowledge or expertise. Their testimony is generally limited to facts they directly observed and common-sense inferences drawn from those facts. Unlike expert witnesses, they cannot offer opinions on technical or scientific matters.
