The quality or state of being in accordance with the law. An action, agreement, or object possesses legality if it does not violate any statute, regulation, or common law principle currently in force within a given jurisdiction. The principle of legality, nullum crimen sine lege, is a core concept in criminal law, stipulating that a person cannot be punished for an act that was not proscribed by law at the time it was committed.
