Due process of law

The principle that the government must act fairly and in accordance with established legal rules when depriving an individual of life, liberty, or property. It encompasses both procedural due process, which dictates fair procedures, and substantive due process, which protects certain fundamental rights. This concept is enshrined in the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution.
