Liberty interest

A constitutionally protected freedom or right that cannot be infringed upon by the government without due process of law. These interests include fundamental rights such as freedom from bodily restraint, the right to contract, and the right to engage in common occupations. Before depriving an individual of a liberty interest, the government must provide notice and an opportunity to be heard.
