Net loss

The negative financial result that occurs when total expenses, including taxes, interest, and depreciation, exceed total revenues and gains for a specific accounting period. This figure represents the overall decrease in a company's or individual's net worth from its operations. For tax purposes, a net operating loss (NOL) can sometimes be carried forward or backward to offset taxable income in other years, subject to jurisdictional rules like those in the Internal Revenue Code.
