Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-003792

A fee levied on every adult as a prerequisite for voting in an election, without regard to income or resources. Historically used in some jurisdictions to disenfranchise poor and minority voters, this type of tax is now unconstitutional in the United States for all federal, state, and local elections. The Twenty-fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in 1964, explicitly prohibits poll taxes in federal elections.
