Pro tanto

To the extent of a partial payment or satisfaction of a claim or judgment. This legal principle acknowledges that a debt or obligation has been fulfilled only in part, not entirely. For instance, a settlement agreement might be considered pro tanto satisfaction for a portion of the damages claimed in a lawsuit.
