Qualified domestic trust

A trust used to defer estate taxes on property passing to a non-citizen surviving spouse. The trust must meet specific requirements, including having at least one U.S. citizen or domestic corporation as a trustee. The principal of the trust is subject to estate tax when distributed to the spouse or upon the spouse's death.
