Savings and loan

A type of financial institution that traditionally specializes in accepting savings deposits and originating mortgage loans. These institutions, also known as thrifts, were historically focused on providing home financing to individuals. They are regulated by federal and state agencies, such as the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).
