Stock option

A contract that gives an employee the right, but not the obligation, to purchase a specific number of shares of the company's stock at a predetermined price, known as the strike price. The option is exercisable for a limited period after a vesting schedule is met. The tax treatment of stock options depends on whether they are non-qualified stock options (NQSOs) or incentive stock options (ISOs).
