To evaluate and assume the financial risk of another party in exchange for a fee or premium. In insurance, an underwriter assesses an applicant's risk profile to decide whether to provide coverage and at what price. In finance, an investment bank underwrites a securities offering by purchasing the new shares from the issuer and reselling them to the public, guaranteeing the issuer a certain amount of capital.
