Wash sale

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005206

A transaction in which an investor sells a security at a loss and then repurchases substantially identical securities within 30 days before or after the sale date. The Internal Revenue Service disallows the deduction of losses from wash sales for tax purposes. This rule prevents investors from artificially creating tax losses without genuinely changing their investment position.
