Year and a day
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005283
A traditional common law period of one year and one day, used to fix the duration of certain rights and time limits. Its best-known use was in homicide, where a death occurring more than a year and a day after an injury could not be treated as caused by it. Most jurisdictions have abolished that rule, so a murder prosecution now turns on proof of causation without a fixed cutoff.
