Year and day

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-005285

A traditional common law period of one year and one day, used to fix time limits for certain legal consequences. Its most familiar use was the homicide rule, under which a death more than a year and a day after an injury could not support a murder charge. Most jurisdictions have abolished that rule, leaving causation to be proved without a fixed cutoff.
