Anchor ice

  1. Submerged ice that forms on the bed of a river or lake, or on objects in flowing water, when the water temperature drops below freezing. It typically forms on rough surfaces or objects that have lost heat to the atmosphere. This type of ice can pose hazards to navigation and aquatic ecosystems.

  2. In hydrologic terms, submerged frazil ice attached or anchored to the river bottom, irrespective of its formation.
