Atmospheric river

A narrow corridor of concentrated moisture in the atmosphere, often thousands of kilometers long and hundreds of kilometers wide. These corridors transport large amounts of water vapor from tropical or subtropical regions poleward. They are a primary cause of heavy precipitation and flooding in many mid-latitude coastal areas.
