Automatic tide gauge
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003726
An instrument that continuously and autonomously measures and records the height of the sea level at a specific location. It employs technologies such as floats in a stilling well, pressure sensors on the seabed, or non-contact methods like acoustic or radar sensors pointing at the water surface. The recorded data are used for tidal prediction, storm surge warnings, and long-term studies of sea level change.
