Baseflow storage

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003847

The volume of water held in a catchment's subsurface, such as in soil and shallow aquifers, that is available for release into streams as base flow. This storage is recharged by infiltration of precipitation and depleted as it slowly discharges into surface water bodies. The capacity of baseflow storage determines a watershed's ability to sustain streamflow during prolonged dry spells.
