Available storage capacity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003737

The volume within a reservoir, lake, or soil profile that is empty and available to store additional water from precipitation or inflow. It is calculated as the total storage capacity minus the volume of water currently held in storage. This value is a key parameter in flood forecasting and water management, determining how much runoff a catchment can absorb before downstream flooding occurs.
