Depression storage

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000687

  1. The volume of water temporarily held in small surface depressions, puddles, or irregularities on the land surface before it can infiltrate the soil or flow as runoff. This storage capacity varies with surface roughness, vegetation, and soil type. It represents an initial loss in the hydrological cycle before surface runoff can begin.

  2. In hydrologic terms, the volume of water contained in natural depressions in the land surface, such as puddles.
