Channel storage

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004250

The volume of water temporarily held within a river channel and its adjacent floodplain during the passage of a flood wave. This storage effect attenuates the flood peak and lengthens the duration of high flow as water moves downstream. Hydrological routing models explicitly account for channel storage to accurately predict the timing and magnitude of flood crests.
