Flood routing

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001006

  1. The process of predicting the changes in the shape and timing of a flood wave as it moves through a river channel or reservoir. It involves calculating the attenuation and translation of the flood hydrograph. This technique is used for forecasting downstream flood levels and designing flood control measures, often employing hydraulic or hydrologic routing methods.

  2. In hydrologic terms, process of determining progressively the timing, shape, and amplitude of a flood wave as it moves downstream to successive points
    along the river
