Flood proofing
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010508
A combination of structural and non-structural adjustments made to a building or facility to reduce or eliminate the risk of damage from flooding. Measures include elevating the structure, using water-resistant building materials, sealing walls against water entry (dry flood proofing), or designing the lower levels to allow floodwaters to enter and exit (wet flood proofing). Regulations for new construction in designated floodplains, such as those from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), often mandate specific flood proofing techniques.
