Detention storage

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000694

  1. The temporary storage of precipitation on surfaces or in depressions before it either infiltrates the ground, evaporates, or flows off as surface runoff. This includes water held in puddles, on vegetation, or in small surface irregularities. It reduces the immediate volume of runoff and delays its arrival in drainage systems.

  2. In hydrologic terms, the volume of water, other than depression storage, existing on the land surface as flowing water which has not yet reached the
    channel.
