Surface retention
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009445
The amount of precipitation that is held on the land surface in small depressions, vegetation, or as a thin film, before it can infiltrate the soil or become runoff. This stored water eventually evaporates or infiltrates, reducing the immediate runoff volume. It is a component of the hydrological cycle, influencing flood potential and soil moisture.
