Retention storage
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008549
The portion of precipitation that is held on or in the land surface and does not contribute to streamflow or groundwater recharge, instead being lost to evaporation or transpiration. This includes interception by vegetation, depression storage in surface irregularities, and water absorbed by the soil that does not drain. It is a key component in the water balance equation for a given catchment.
