Groundwater storage

The total volume of water held in aquifers and other underground formations within a defined area. This quantity represents the water available in the saturated zone below the water table that can be extracted or discharged naturally to springs and streams. Changes in groundwater storage are calculated as the difference between recharge from precipitation and surface water, and discharge from pumping and natural flows.
