Saturated zone

The area beneath the Earth's surface where all pore spaces in the soil or rock are completely filled with water. The upper boundary of this zone is the water table. Water in the saturated zone is known as groundwater and moves under the influence of gravity and pressure gradients, supplying wells and springs.
