Surface detention
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009431
The temporary storage of precipitation on the land surface in small depressions, puddles, or as a thin film, before it infiltrates the soil, evaporates, or flows as surface runoff. This water does not contribute to streamflow until the depressions are filled. The amount of surface detention depends on the microtopography and infiltration capacity of the land.
