Overland flow
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001965
The movement of water across the land surface as a sheet or in small channels, occurring when the rate of precipitation exceeds the infiltration capacity of the soil. This runoff contributes to streamflow and can cause erosion. It is a key component of the hydrological cycle, especially in urbanized or impermeable areas.
In hydrologic terms, the flow of rainwater or snowmelt over the land surface toward stream channels. After it enters a watercourse it becomes runoff.
