Overlap

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007761

The condition where the absorption bands of two or more atmospheric gases coincide at the same wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. This phenomenon affects the total atmospheric absorption of radiation, as one gas can reduce the marginal radiative effect of another in the shared spectral region. For instance, the absorption bands of water vapor and carbon dioxide overlap in parts of the infrared spectrum, influencing the total greenhouse effect.
